What to put on an invoice for handymen and odd-job businesses

As well as the basics that every invoice needs (your details, the client’s details, a number, a date and a total), handymen and odd-job businesses should include:

  • Each job as a separate line
  • Time spent or the price agreed for each
  • Any materials you bought for the job
  • Your minimum charge, if one applied

Example lines

These are the lines this template starts with. The rates are examples only, so change them to your own prices.

Getting paid without chasing

Listing every job separately shows the customer how much they got for their money, which helps with repeat work. "Odd jobs, 4 hours" does not.

If you have a minimum charge, state it as its own line and quantity so it does not look like padded hours.

Questions

Do I need to give a receipt as well?

Once the customer has paid, choose Mark paid in Your invoices and download the PDF again. It will carry a PAID stamp and the date, which serves as a receipt.

Can I invoice for materials I collected?

Yes. Add the materials at cost or with your handling charge, and keep the shop receipt in case the customer asks.
