What to put on an invoice for electricians

As well as the basics that every invoice needs (your details, the client’s details, a number, a date and a total), electricians should include:

  • The address of the installation
  • The circuits or equipment you worked on
  • Materials supplied, itemised
  • The certificate you issued, by type and number
  • Your registration body and number, if you are a member of a scheme

Example lines

These are the lines this template starts with. The rates are examples only, so change them to your own prices.

Getting paid without chasing

Mention the certificate on the invoice. Customers file the two together, and it reminds them that the testing was part of what they paid for.

For larger jobs, invoice in stages: first fix, second fix, then testing and sign-off. Quote the original estimate number in the reference box on each one.

More on this in payment terms explained.

Questions

How do I charge for materials?

List them on their own lines at the price you are charging the customer. You do not need to show your trade price or mark-up.

Can I add a call-out charge?

Yes. Add it as its own line so it is clear it is separate from time on the job.
